Taking One Snack," also known as "Take One Snack," consists of traditional shortbread-like cookies made with organically grown grains such as millet, sorghum, all-purpose flour, and sesame seeds. These cookies are flavored with cardamom and cloves and finished with icing sugar.
The history of this snack dates back to 1070 BC in Napata, Kerma, during the time of the Kingdom of Kush, an ancient kingdom in Nubia. Known as shul why-why (which translates to "Just Take One"), this snack was not only cherished but also widely enjoyed. Growing up in a Nubian household, I learned that each family had its own unique recipe for making shul why-why. This recipe is a closely guarded secret passed down through generations. The snack is primarily prepared during holidays, major celebrations, and feasts.
I am excited to share this cherished piece of my family's tradition with you.
